This picture was taken from the balcony of the Pineapple Park hostel where we stayed on the Kona side of the Big Island. I was attempting to record the
green flash - the last split second of light from the sun as seen at low latitudes. Air pollution tends to filter out the green which is why the flash usually can't be seen in the conterminous US. While I did see the flash through the camera lens, this meant that the shutter wasn't open and hence I missed it by the smallest time snippet.
