010Rockfall

The next day of the workshop was the field trip to visit the lower weather station on the Morteratsch Glacier. The people that could ski black diamond runs (most of this crew) rode the same cable car up to Diavolezza and then skied down the length of the Morteratsch Glacier to the weather station. The rest of us cross country skiied or snow shoed up to the weather station from the terminus of the glacier. The valley walls were oversteepened by the glacier prior to its retreat to its present position, leaving them vulnerable to lots of mini-avalanches and rockfalls. Most of the loose rocks in this picture were probably deposited there (in a moraine) by the glacier prior to its retreat. I liked the pattern of tracks that the rolling rocks left in the snow.
