Salt is another commodity that is in demand in Thailand. One area that we passed through was a salt-producing region. They have salty soils deep below the surface. To get the salt out, they pump salty water up from deep within the soil and then they have two methods to get the salt out of the water. The first method, used during the dry season, is to flood a field and let the water evaporate, subsequently gathering up the salt after all the water is gone. The second method, used during the wetter seasons, is to boil the water off. Rice husks (shown here), which would otherwise simply be agricultural waste, are used as the fuel for boiling the water.
