Shackleton's hut with Mount Erebus. The hut was built during the Nimrod Expedition in 1908. This expedition was seperate from Shackleton's more famous Endurance expedition (1914-1917), when he was on the other side of Antarctica in the Weddell Sea. There is a nice biography of Shackleton at south-pole.com. Among other things, the Nimrod expedition claimed the first ascent of Erebus, a 12,450 foot tall volcano. I'm sure the descent was more fun than the ascent, though the view from the top must have been remarkable. If I'm not mistaken, the mast on top of the hill on the right side of the picture was set up by Mawson during that expedition and it would have held an anemometer to measure wind speeds.
